Post Graduate Departments of Patna University

Department of Law

The Patna University feels proud of having the oldest post-graduate Department of Law in Bihar  and  Jharkhand.  The  Department  is situated in the Patna Law College campus on the bank of the holy river Ganga. Its was established in the Golden Jubilee year of the prestigious  Patna  Law  College.  The Department of  Law commenced with M.L. Teaching in the year 1959. It was the time when the Department of Law functioned as a part of the Patna Law College. It acquired its separate entity in the year 1963 and since that time the Department is enhancing its performance day by day as a constituent unit of Patna University and provides one of the best LL.M Courses and Ph.D. in Law in the country. The excellence  of  the  Post-graduate Department could be credited to the presence of eminent legal luminaries who rendered their services as the Heads of the Department or asideal teachers in the field of Law. The first great name which the Department, as well as the University may be proud of, is Prof. V. V. Deshpande, an internationally and nationally recognized jurist and an unparalleled teacher in the field of Law. An eminent scholar in the field  of  Hindu  Law,  he  was  the  founder member of the post-graduate Department of Law. Prof. Dr. R.C. Hingorani is another one of the jewels, recognized internationally for his achievements in the field of Law. He graced the Chair of the Head of the Faculty. He became a member of the Law Commission of India which further served to highlight the name of Patna University and its Department of Law in the country.
