Post Graduate Departments of Patna University

Department of Geology (Selected Under UGC-SAP)

The Department was established  in July, 1946 and since then it has been imparting post- graduate  teaching  besides  being  actively engaged in research in different disciplines with  U.G.C.,  ISRO,  CSIR,  DST  and  P.U. financial  assistance.  Over  the  years  the department  has  grown  and  excelled  in imparting quality teaching, guiding research and  training  students  from  Bihar  and adjoining states. The Department which has had  an  illustrious  past  in  the  realms  of Geochemistry  and  Sedimentology,  is endeavouring  to  emphasise  upon Environmental Geochemistry, Hydrogeology and Disaster Management as also towards establishing infrastructure for Remote Sensing and G.I.S. studies.

The Department has been selected by the UGC under its Special Assistance Programme (SAP) during the 11th Plan. The thrust area of the department is "Integrated Geo-environmental Studies of Kosi Basin with Special Reference to Floods."

The  Department  of  Geology  has  a distinguished record of producing  geologists (GSI, ONGC, State Directorate of Geology and Mines),  scientists,  academics  and  civil servants.

Library :
The Departmental Library has more than 6000 books. It subscribes more than a dozen  national  and  international journals regularly.
