Department of Zoology


The Department of Zoology was established, initially under Patna Science College in 1948, and in July 1952 it was granted the status of a University Department. The Department is housed on the ground floor of the Biology Building of Patna Science College. In the late seventies another building, known as New Biology Building, came into existence. The University Department occupies the ground floor of the building where most of the research laboratories and a Seminar Hall are located.

Areas Covered
Besides teaching in various areas of Zoology, at present students are offered three special papers : Entomology, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Fish and Fisheries.

Other Courses
The Department also imparts teaching in one self-financing M.Sc. Course : (a) Environmental Science and Management.

Infrastructure and facilities
The Department has Lecture theatres, two M. Sc. laboratories;  one for M. Sc. Part-I, and the other for  M.  Sc.  Part-II;  Departmental  Library, Electron Microscopy Laboratory, Dark room, Museum etc. Facilities are also available for research in various fields of Zoology leading to Ph. D. and D. Sc. Degrees. The Department has research and teaching laboratories of Physiology and Biochemistry, Environmental Biology, Fish and  Fisheries,  Cell  and  Molecular  Biology, Entomology,  and  Toxicology.  Each  of  the research laboratories has an adjacent chamber for the respective faculty member. Some of the important equipments available are Gas Liquid Chromatography,  High  Pressure  Liquid Chromatography, Refrigerated Ultracentrifuge, Cryocut, ELISA and Ultra Microtome, PCR, Auto-Analyzer,  Electrophoresis,  Atomic Absorption  Spectrophotometer,  UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Inverted Phase contrast and Fluorescence  Microscope.  The  Department library  has  more  than 7500  books  and ten journals are subscribed on regular basis.
