Department of Sociology


The Post-graduate Department of Sociology, Patna University, was started in the year 1950 by Prof. V. K. N. Menon as the Chairman, in order to promote higher studies in the subject. The study of Sociology in a developing society has its own importance. The sociologists have a significant role to play in a society that wishes to bring about “planned change”. This is the oldest department of Sociology in the entire North East Region. Its objectives are as follows-

1 To impart theoretical and methodological knowledge  in  the  various  branches  of Sociology at M.A. and Ph.D. levels.
2   To  impart  specialized  training  in  field research.
3   To  impart  specialized  training  in  (a) Industrial Sociology (b) Demography (c) Indian Ethnography (d) Anthropology (e) Social  Change  and (f)  Advanced Methodology.  Besides,  the  department offers courses in most relevant areas as per the requirement of the present day society, namely Political and Educational Sociology. The popularity of the subject is indicated by the growing demand of its teaching in University department and in colleges. Though in the University Department the number of seats is only 100 per year, the number of applicants has increased  substantially  in  the  last  decade, resulting in starting of P.G. teaching in some colleges.
The  University  Department  of  Sociology maintains  close  links  with  the  Sociology department of the other colleges of Patna University in academic matters through its departmental council.

The department proposes to undertake for study the subjects which have direct bearing on the socio-economic life of the people. The thrust areas of the study will be population; ecology  problem;  rural  tension;  social exclusion and empowerment;  development and  change;  agrarian  problems;  dalits  in society.
